Surgical Retreatment (Apicoectomy)
An apicoectomy is a specialized endodontic procedure designed to treat infections at the tip of a tooth’s root.
When conventional root canal therapy fails to eliminate infection or if a tooth has persistent symptoms, an apicoectomy may be recommended. During this minimally invasive surgery, the infected tissue is removed, and the tip of the root is sealed to prevent further complications. This procedure can help save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted, providing long-term relief and preserving natural tooth structure. Our expert team uses advanced techniques to ensure comfort and a successful outcome.
Why would I need endodontic surgery?
Generally, a root canal treatment is all that needed to save teeth. If root canal infection does not heal after root canal treatment then surgical retreatment or apicoectomy is recommended.
What is an Apicoectomy?
An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root over a period of months restoring full function.
What should I expect after an apicoectomy?
Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort or slight swelling while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. To alleviate any discomfort, an appropriate pain medication will be recommended. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call our office.
